Myofascial release is an alternative medicine therapy claimed to be useful for treating skeletal muscle immobility and pain by relaxing contracted muscles, improving blood and lymphatic circulation, and stimulating the stretch reflex in muscles.
Myofascial release therapy is a type of gentle, constant massage that releases tightness and pain throughout your myofascial tissues. First, your healthcare provider will locate trigger points, or knots, in your fascial tissues. Then, they'll gently apply pressure until they feel the tension release.
Difference between massage and myofascial
Massage uses hands-on techniques to loosen muscles, restore motion and decrease pain. Soft tissues are manipulated to promote a deeper healing and overall well-being. Myofascial release focuses on stretching and manual pressure that loosens restricted motion, holding hand placements 3+ minutes requiring increased treatment time.
After a treatment
Drink more water to help your body flush out toxins that have been built up in the tissues over time. This will also help prevent soreness after a treatment.
We’ll give you an individualized self treatment and home exercise program to benefit you as you begin your healing journey. As you progress, we may change up or expand your home program with therapeutic exercises and specific stretches to help you achieve the goals we set together.
Spend some quiet time bringing awareness into your body – give it permission to let go of anything no longer serving you, and give yourself permission to do and feel whatever you need to heal.
Some people become nauseous or lightheaded or develop soreness during or after treatment. This should subside within a day or two and you should feel less pain and move more easily than you did before. If soreness lasts for more than a day or two, let us know.
After Your MFR (myofascial release) Session
Any of the following results are an indication that your body is restructuring, and normal after an MFR session.
- Muscle Soreness: You might feel muscle soreness similar to a good workout at the gym. Just keep hydrating and moving through the soreness. This should subside within a day or two and you should feel less pain and move more easily than you did before. If soreness lasts for more than a day or two, let us know.
- Hydration: Be sure to drink twice as much water as you normally would drink; especially for the 2 hours following your session. This will also help prevent headaches after your session.
- Dreams: You might have strange dreams following your session. These could be your body’s way of unwinding and releasing old traumas.
- Emotions: Since MFR can release emotions stored in the tissues, your emotions might feel easily triggered. Just allow them to surface and express them in a safe setting.
- Epsom Salts: If you feel your session was exceptionally intense, soaking in an Epson Salt bath could be soothing.
- Different Sensations: Sometimes as our bodies shift with MFR, you might be aware of sensations in different areas. Just unwind through, and feel the sensations.
- Nausea/lightheadedness: Some people become nauseous or lightheaded. This should subside within a day or two

Your body will start trusting your mind again by the actions you take. When your body starts sending out signals – listen! Really give full attention to your body.
